- Daeydan & Shelley Near a campfire in the Fortress Homestead.

– ” Draeydan & Shelley near daybreak at a campfire inside the Homestead Fortress” –

— I was shocked at how good this looked on a gaming monitor with the right settings. This was from work done in late January of this year – 2022.

— The ‘Fortress Homestead’ grew from an idea – almost a vision that popped into my head while I was writing last November’s “NaNoWriMo” novel. Bullied and abused teenagers discover that parallel worlds and ‘Quantum Physics’ are real and “Drae’s” uncle Scott – who’s been presumed dead for ten years – showed up with a mysterious friend who was able to transport the ‘almost eighteen year olds’ to a newly discovered, peaceful planet with almost no ‘sentient’ population – that seems to have a barrier or some kind of sentient force – that keeps nasty, aggressive, warlike humans from being able to land there, or if they do manage to touch down on the planet – they develop extreme difficulties breathing and moving around. That parallel world has inhospitable islands where the nasties can recover and not quite thrive – but there seems that that intelligent force wants to maintain a balance and needs those unhappy brutes who continually scheme and plot to escape the inhospitable areas and conquer the peaceful areas – But their health suffers as soon as they leave those islands.

"Kameron Showing Off"

– ” Kameron Showing Off” From July 2020″ –

— Kameron is a “Faer Elf” – a two thousand year old member of a race reputed to be short and ‘spindly’ and ‘peevish’ – with a talent for ‘Nuisance Magick’ that rarely kills anyone, but makes anyone’s life miserable if they’re stupid enough to attack him or anyone or anything he cares about.

Saturday – July 18th, 2020 – the Border Fixin Squad is Out in Full Force –

Saturday, July 18th, 2020 —> +28˚C / +82˚F —> & Not so muggy in Atlantic Canada @ 5:30 pm – I think they Celebrated Cheryl W.’s birthday in South Africa & Called it a Nelson Mandela Appreciation Day. –

- Draelen notices Buildings are up off the ground in Birkenport -

– Draelen said, “Uhh – Things are kind of up in the air over here in Birkenport at the moment – Send in the troops -” –

— Another typical Saturday in the Game Building World?

— Excuse me if you already heard this, but we had to fix a few things in Aerendel City – We needed to disconnect the City from its surrounding spaces, or areas – mountains to the north- hills to the south – Highland Forest to the North-West – That was the easy part. Aerendel City had not yet been the focus of Urban Development – It was just sitting there, with lots of plans on several ‘drawing boards’.

— We worked on just the basic landscape, made no major changes in the shape or the border regions at all, smiled and moved it back into place, re-connected it seamlessly with all its surrounding areas and checked the borders and everything looked fine.

— But then a Newbie builder took a look around and a lot of things were not fine. A week before this started Nikki took a look around Landsdrop and found that Wolfe Ridge had gone wandering. Draelen checked it out, came toward Wolfe Ridge from the West, and everything was fine. But then Newbie – Skarhfe – on his way to Del-Vahria – found the same problem and ‘sketched’ the absence of Wolfe Ridge { took a screen shot  and ‘shared it’ with the rest of us. Lucky for us, Skarhfe might have been new to our team, but he knew what he was doing and he corrected the problem with, in Kaelyn’s words: “Ease and Grace” { The first time we heard that we thought ‘Ease’ might have refered to Aeslynne – and wondered who Grace was. }

— Draelen, Volffe, Niki, Evelynn, newcomers Yurgan, and Jim – set about correcting things in just about the same manner that Skarhfe had fixed the ‘Where the bleep did Wolfe Ridge wander off to?-‘ problem.

— And we discovered that if we fixed the border between Aerendel City and ‘AerWest02’ from the East – from Aerendel City – it looked fine, but when Evelynn ran around to check something from the AerWest / Highland Forest side – Things were definitely not ‘fine’.

— We thought we fixed the border between Highland Forest and ‘Mountain Range “A”-‘ where they both just come close to Aerendel City – but after things looked ‘fine’ again there – and after Evelynn ran back around to Aerendel City with nothing obviously out of place – she ran back down to Birkenport and, “Uht – oh!” – Birkenport hadn’t moved, but all the buildings and lamp-posts had jumped at least three feet in the air and hovered there. And the sea level in that important port city had dropped about five meters – and that fell under the ‘Not Good-‘ category.

— So we called out the troops, and a lot of us took turns fixing things – and when we reached the point of exhaustion we went to sleep and somebody else was always ready to take our place –

… Let me finish this later – They need me in the landscape emergency room…

- Yurgan paused to marvel at the red clouds just after sunset in the city -

– “Yurgan paused to marvel at the red clouds just after sunset at the edge of Aerendel City.” –

— The clouds look like they’re closer to a ‘hot pink’ than red to me, but I’ve been assured by others, the clouds around sunset were definitely red.  –

— Have I said too much about everybody’s efforts to repair borders etc.?

- Red Sunsets? This is the border between Birkenport and Daelen-

– “Red at night -” no – somebody might take that wrong – Red Haired Evelynn – in a reddish fog a bit after sunset – with the stars shining through –

— Somebody suggested we compile a ‘Rogue’s Gallery’ of the guys and gals on our team – Sounds okay to me –

— And I better sign off for now – It’s been a long day and a half —

We’ve Been Busy & “Dat’s Good-“

Thursday, July 16th, 2020 —> +19˚C / +52˚F —> & Mostly cloudy @ 2:34 am in Atlantic Canada —> & Jim says it’s Nancy { maiden name “Aspinwall” }’s birthday today – Yesterday washis grandfather’s, Robert Carlson Wellington Senior’s Birthday. & Linda Rondstandt’s 🙂 –

— Where should I start?

- Skarhfe looking at the end of the world. -

– “Skarhfe Proves that Niki Was Right.” – Wolfe Ridge went into hiding….” –

— We never doubted Niki when she said she got to the vortex but it wasn’t there – Draelen ran down from Del-Vahria, all the way through the Shadowlands and Stone Lake and Wolf and Wolfe Ridges – and the crossing from Wolfe Ridge to “AerWest01 looked fine from where he came from – He ran through the spinning vortex and smiled at Niki and turned around and ran back, no problem. Niki closed her eyes and ran off the edge of the world – and didn’t die – and didn’t fall through eternity and all that –

— Draelen and Nikki got their own accounts this week – Drae’s third builder character is a diminutive – possibly a Faer Elf guy wearing a wizard’s shirt and carrying a healer’s kit – He re-created Nikii’s path to the end of the world – and sure enough – there was a wide open space, a bonafide “Nothing” where Wolfe Ridge should be. He had the presence of mind to take a selfie, obviously with a levitated wizard-ish selfie device – and then fixed the problem – made sure that “AerWest01” was linked to Wolf Ridge – which is directly West and “UP” from Wolfe Ridge { Two families, related, brothers, named ‘Wolfe’ – immigrated here a few months apart – When the second brother registered with the ‘Governor’s Agent’ in Birkenport the agent was upset that the bribe that was offered wasn’t as large as he hoped it should have been and spelled the name “Wolf” instead of ‘Wolfe’ out of spite and in spite of protest. —> The first brother had already taken the Princes’ advice and gone West – staked a claim that has been called “Wolfe’s Ridge” ever since. Details are a bit fuzzy – and seem to change a bit every time anybody tells the story – but the first brother thought the second brother should have either offered a bigger bribe or ‘Cold-Cocked’ the agent, forged the documents and beat it to ‘The Ridge’ – He might have actually said, “It wouldda been more honorable even if ya got caught and landed in the slammer- The agents, even the stinkin governor are afraid of me – and they should be afraid of you to- ya wimp. We couldda had ourselfs a legendary Donny-Brook that wouldda established our reputation as bad asses for ever -” – and gave his brother the upper -Western half of the ridge – The ‘Soggy’ section. Brother number two didn’t mind at all. He was the better farmer of the two and the sometimes legendary rain storms up there not only grow wonderful crops, but because the Western half of the ridge is so steep, 99% of the potential crop ruining flood waters run down into his brother’s half of the ridge and flood him out regularly. }

— Oh – back to Skarhfe – when he was pretty sure his gamble would work, he removed the link between AerWest01 and Wolfe Ridge – and then re-added it – and bingo – the errant property magically appeared where it shouldda been all along –

- Skarhfe stares into a blinding sunset -

– “Skarhfe stepped into a blinding sunset” –

— Skarhfe’s efforts, as soon as he triumphantly dashed through the spinning vortex and did not have his body parts scattered all over the continent – were ‘rewarded’ with a blinding sunset through a thick fog – it made going a bit slow, but he felt pretty good about getting that slippery border situation fixed so easily –

- Skarhfe hopes that's just fog -

– “Skarhfe hesitated at the top of the ridge between Stone Lake and the Shadowlands.” –

— After hearing stories of adventurers stepping across borders and never being seen or heard of again, and then seeing that disappearing land masses might actually be a thing – Skarhfe stood atop the ridge that marked the border between Stone Lake and the Shadowlands and waited until a small herd of deer happily galloped up the slope and emerged from the fog – before he took a breath and bolstered the courage to take one step at a time down what could very well have been a slippery slope to oblivion – Nope – it wasn’t oblivion he stepped into, it was the Shadowlands – and while nobody’s reported reputedly haunted buildings falling out of the sky and barely missing anyone lately – there’s always a chance –

- Drae in Islandia -

– “Drae made it to Islandia.” –

— Islandia is another slightly spooky place. It’s reputed to be a ghost town that’s been completely taken over by vegetation. There are those who say you have to be very brave and quite foolhardy to attempt to find the place. And most who make it through a cavern and some pretty tight spaces don’t stay long, and nobody wants to spend the night there – but Drae laughed. A large, muscular constable followed him all the way and then turned and ran at the fist sound of hooves. Drae laughed, “Our big, brave constable was scared half to death by a goat.”

- "Mending Borders" -

– “Mending Borders” – Before Skarhfe fixed our roaming land mass problem – Draelen and Volffe were out inspecting borders and mending them as needed. –

— The screen shot above, if you look closely – shows a slight tear between Wolfe Ridge on the right and Wolf Ridge on the left. None of our guys and women laughed at anyone who reported problems with border crossings and possible sentient land masses getting up and moving if they felt slighted or neglected … So yeah, everybody was out, checking, and applying band-aids when needed.

- "Niki's predawn view of Del-Vahria." -

– “Niki’s pre-dawn view of Del-Varia” This world has some ‘picture perfect’ sun rises and sunsets. –

— She’s got the soul of an artist and the voice of an angel -And it isn’t just me who thinks so – Niki saw this inspiring sight from the Customs House on the Isthmus.

- Morning Fog -

– After Niki stared at the view from the customs house for half an hour she stepped outside just before sunrise and saw this –

— One healer called the morning fog ‘a salve for the soul’. Sounds like a pretty good assessment to me.

- Drae in the Shadowlands Cavern -

– “Drae in the cavern in the Shadowlands.” –

— Depending on your point of view and the poetry of your heart and soul and mind – you may find the way crystals in some stone reflect and amplify and transform the colour and tone of the light from a torch, or in this case, a gas light – You may find the changes in the light either annoying or ‘magical’ –

— And it’s way past my bedtime, but I told the crew I’d get their pictures up and here – I’ve done it. And now – before my head hits the desk when I pass out … I better bid y’all a fond “Adieu” – don’t tell our tea-totallers I found somebody’s secret bottle of hootch – and it was flavored!

Thursday, July 9th, 2020 –

– Thursday, July 9th, 2020 —> +24˚C / + 83˚F – Mostly sunny & hazy with maybe 30-50% of the sky supporting smallish clouds – with Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for later – Where I’m at in Atlantic Canada @ 4:57 pm –

- Nikki + Draelen in Landsdrop just past Sundown -

– “Nikki & Draelen in Landsdrop just past Sundown.” – The area they’ve been working on lately –

— Things have gone a lot more smoothly lately since we got everybody to “Lock” all their heightmaps when they were finished ‘Messing with them’ —> Jim managed to build an impressive cavern in less than an hour. and he didn’t have to drag all the parts out beyond the area and work on them, then drag them back and fuss for several minutes to get them lined up right. — Charging straight ahead with your head down and your eyes closed might not be the most effective strategy in world-building.

- Nikki & Drae in the Landsdrop Cavern -

– “Nikki & Drae in the Landsdrop Cavern” –

— The idea is – crystals in the stone reflect firelight in different colours and intensity – & Jim is correct – on a decent gaming monitor this looks fantastic. –

- The 'Drop' at Landsdrop -

– “The drop at Landsdrop” – the irregular line of rocky cliffs that give the area its name. –

— The cliffs that give the “Landsdrop” area its name – An “escarpment” in geological terms? The term is often used to describe the Niagara region of ‘southern’ Canada. – At first we were not overly thrilled with the look of the texture we’re using here – At a distance it can look funky – but I guess the fog in the ‘atmosphere’ goes a long way to help that when you’re at avatar level on the ground. But some of our avatars will have functional wings. And we’ve been wondering if characters with ‘Night Vision’ would see what we developers see when we turn on the lightbulb — everything? Another quirk with this texture: When you lower the ‘scale’ to something like 0.25 large areas with this texture look great – but when your character gets close – not only is the magic gone, but it looks like the texture failed and left you with reddish purple lines and foggy fields of grey and tan. So – we guessed that we can use that for cliffs seen at a distance – where nothing exciting will ever happen – and maybe gradually bring the scale back up to ‘normal’ closer to the ground – & closer to where anything might happen.

— Let me digress for a moment – Jim’s theory is to let every player believe their character has an unfair advantage and counsel them not to do anything stupid while they’re at lower levels – “Don’t jump off a cliff if you don’t have the right magical armor -” … stuff like that. I rolled my eyes at that idea at first, but then, the more I think about it – yeah – that works. A thief should believe he or she has an unfair advantage when it comes to picking pockets of npc’s. – Then learn caution when they go up against the higher leveled & more perceptive npcs and player’s characters. Yeah – that works.

Yahoo Groups will be nuking its group’ content soon. they will not allow any new content after tomorrow, the 28th. I copied everything worth copying and pasted that into 60 pages of word processing { Open Office } @ a font size of 12 pixels ( I think it’s measured in pixels ).

So- at any rate – there’s a new page and some of its content is personal memorablia and some might be worth reading.

It’s ‘The Ides Of March’ – Do you know where your sanity is?

{ Thursday, March 15th, 2018  —> -3˚C / +26˚F @ 5:21 am —> In the dark in Atlantic Canada – & It may be snowing – the day after we had two feet of hard-packed wind-blown heavy wet snow in our driveway and had a heck of a time digging out —> It was actually easier to shovel than push and pull the snow-blower through it. — }

Kameron, the Ottarian.

– Kameron, He really is quite a character, but he gets things done –

This guy showed up just in time for St Patrick’s Day – & for whoever and/or whatever he was in his ‘Real Life’ before he woke up in this parallel dimension, he really seems to be enjoying himself. – Here he is exploring the inland sea – east of DelVahria – and may be trying to look like a stereotypical Leprechaun. He’s even wearing hints of green.

We have been super busy lately. Jim got a new desk and moving stuff around from the old credenza to the new desk – discovered lots of things he thought were lost.

But then, out there in the Aerendel country side, we have a lot to talk about… A LOT!

Laerry in the main cavern South of the Forest Elf lands.

– Laerry – The Half-Elf Ranger-Troubleshooter thinks this cavern might be a hot bed of wild portals. –

There is a Cavern on the old road from Stone Lake to DelVahria that is either haunted, or may be very active with wild portals. Our more easily rattled operatives ask to be posted somewhere else almost as soon as they arrive there. Laerry is one of the toughest Half-Elf Rangers on our team – tough in body, mind and spirit – after witnessing the disappearing trees and the ‘Ghost Castle’ south of the cavern, he spent a lot of time looking around and yesterday he walked through the same exit he’d been in and out of dozens of times and discovered –

Shadow Lands

– The ‘Shadow-lands’ –

Jeff called this landscape the ‘Shadow-Lands’ – The first time Jeff ( a Highe Elf ) stumbled through the entrance/exit at the wrong time and saw this – he wondered what kind of ‘Weapon of Mass Destruction’ could have killed everything in the land, dried up the rivers and creeks and left not a trace of what happened. When he crossed back through the invisible portal to the dimension he is familiar with, and turned around to stare at the lifeless landscape one more time, & saw, instead, the Forest Elf Valley known as the Keltic Vale – full of life and sunlight – He was both very relieved and very upset – Relieved to know he was not stuck in a land with no food or water – Upset because he was the first one of us to witness the phantom trees and appearing-disappearing village around the ghostly castle that doesn’t stick around long enough for anybody to properly investigate it. And with walking into the ‘Shadow Lands’ – he wondered what the heck else could go wrong, or go crazy on him in the near future.

Sand and gravel on the cavern's floor.

– This is evidence that this cavern may have been at the seashore, and probably subject to tidal ups and downs – Not only is much of the sand and gravel on the cavern’s floor nearly perfectly level – There are sea shells mixed in –

We can probably count on a lot of Rangers and others showing up for an official investigation around this cavern in the near future. And possibly multiple teams investigating multiple angles to the many mysteries that might be centred around this cavern, or this area. To be fair – there have been quite a few claims over the years that many of the crystals carefully extracted from the walls here have ‘supernatural’ qualities.

Me { TaleRocker ) in the middle of a field of blue flowers.

– On the purely positive side – many species of flowers are doing quite well this season. –

Kaeren spent a lot of time checking the soil and looking for organic fertilizer less than two months ago, looks like her efforts have paid off.

Julienne at the boardwalk on the border between Keltic Vale and Delvahria.

– Julienne { seen here sfter cleaning up a lot of weeds around the docks and boardwalk } – has, according to her cousin – “Gone native in a big way.” Here she looks a lot more like an Ottarian Bard than she did when she first arrived. –

Julienne, ( above ) is a Bard – with Métis ancestors – { she was a violin/fiddle prodigy back in the parallel world she came here from } with a flair for the dramatic. When she heard that this reporter had a contraband iPhone – { “No Service – Ever!” but it takes great photos – } she disappeared for five minutes and came back to finish her shift ‘dressed for her close-up’. – Rumours have it that she has her eye on an Ottarian who is at the right age to be looking for a mate.

— I should quit now and send this off. And no, I will not tell you how I keep my iPhone charged in this pre-industrial land, Just don’t look too closely at the solar panel and charger at the top of the guard tower. Oops, you didn’t hear that from me – 😉

Almost Halloween?

Tuesday, October 25th, 2016 — +6˚C / +43˚F — Grey & Damp in Atlantic Canada @ 1:48 pm —

"Stone Lake" with young woman in foreground.

This is a book-cover screenshot for a novel that probably won’t be finished enough to submit to a contest that I needed the novel and book-cover to enter before November 6th. But it’s almost true to the vision I had of the ‘Stone Lake’ that plays a central part in the story.

— I worked this up to submit it as a book cover for a contest, but I probably won’t have finished writing the novel in time to enter that contest after all. The young woman in the shot looks enough like the young woman in the novel, and I really liked the expression I was lucky enough to capture – What you see above is possible only while editing both the character and facial morphing along with turning the fog off inside the editing ‘blade’.

Normal screen shot - cropped.

This is a screenshot with the fog back on and the character morphing and facial morphing turned off.

— This is the ‘normal view’ a player would get, the trigger box below the character would have spells and skills that character would have ready to be clicked on- I’m happy with the way the fog feature colours the forests in the background.

— Other than this, we are waiting for promised upgrades in the world building stuff.

After Much Angst – I ‘built’ a Tree –

Tuesday, July 12th, 201 — 13°C / 56°F Clear & It looks like the sun might rise on Atlantic Canada @5:38 am —

Speed Tree 'built' with sample templates & textures.

My first tree – Um – my first tree that looks like a tree.

It might not look like much, & I’m not 1,000% pleased with the way it looks etc. – not crazy about the ‘ash’ type leaves, don’t love the overall shape of the branches and stuff – [ but they have ‘tools’ that let you mess with the branches, droop them down, warp them – twist them and apply anthropomorphic human characteristics like that to them… but not right now, I’m tired and my brain stopped functioning a couple hours ago. ] I did not do much modifying after loading the templates, textures and colours that come with the application, but there it is. ( I was afraid it would blow up if I tried to do anything more with it.) And I’m sure Nikki would be proud to stand in its shade while she’s planting flowers.

Um, the angst part. I could not get the application to work on my souped up – tuned up computer that can actually connect to the game world and do stuff. — When I finally got the application to load, it could not load any of the sample files it needed to get down to basic tutoring mode. Crashed every time, no matter what I tried to do — The application does, however, load and work fine ( in the bought-it-used for less than two hundred bucks – almost-as-spiffy-as-the-souped-up-tuned-up-world-building computer — but it can’t connect to the game world to save its life. )

But hey – If I have to burn out and feel all my brain cells dropping dead in total confusion, I might as well go deliriously happy because something actually worked –

We’re Back! — and/or July 9th, 2016 Update?

Saturday, July 9th, 2016 — 11°C / 51°F Cool, Damp & Overcast with some interesting cloud details – like the clouds are almost not defining themselves? @6:51 am in Atlantic Canada. —

Nikki from a greater distance.

‘Nikki the Ottarian’ planting flowers and enjoying a warm spring day – created or ‘morphed’ by Doug Otterson, last night, July 9th. 2016.

Doug asked  me last week if I was back doing anything about our game world. I told him, as a matter of fact I was – I got the computer back up and working (replaced the system fan, replaced the wonky video card, moved memory modules around and got it to work and was able to update and get back into the cloud and begin doing stuff again.)

Last night he sent me a message that one of his latest favourite builder characters ran into some problems and vanished. He tried to fix the invisibility problem and made matters worse. He tried to re-roll the character and couldn’t get the face right, couldn’t get the clothing right, couldn’t get the racial sliders to work correctly, then moved the wrong slider and amazed himself – came up with what he described as the best example of an Ottarian ever.

{{{ An Ottarian is a member of race which believes it evolved from intelligent otters – and became more and more ‘Elvish’ – as opposed to ‘Humanoid’ – over the centuries. And now, except for their small, but extraordinarily hard and sharp claw-like fingernails – would be extremely hard to distinguish from shortish, almost child-like humans or elves. Ottarians are communal, nurturing, playful, – almost always strikingly good-looking, intelligent, inquisitive, – not exactly ‘wise’ – and they have no concept of personal property. They share every thing. They can become totally fascinated with almost anything and bring it home with them, gaze at it in wonder for several days, and then become just as fascinated by something else and almost forget how interesting the first object that ‘followed them home’ used to be.

They do not understand ‘human values’. Currency doesn’t make sense to them at all. If a paper hundred-dollar bill or bank-note is worth two semi precious stones, why would anyone want to carry around a piece of flammable paper that could easily become torn, wrinkled, messed up, ‘defaced’, – rendered useless if covered with ink or paint,- blow away or catch on fire much too easily — when it would be easier and much more sensible to carry around two fascinatingly pretty semi precious stones in the first place?  — They quite often have a closet or an entire store-room full of trinkets and gadgets that followed them home and now only collect dust, until somebody they like and trust takes a shine to any one of the trinkets in their dust closet or treasure room – in which case it is just as fascinating for them to see their friends’ faces light up with happiness and thousands of questions, like, “What is this, what is it for? Who thought of something like this? What happens when you bring it out into the sunlight? What does it feel like in your hands as you walk along singing to yourself? Can you play ‘catch’ with it? What does it feel like if you balance it on your forehead as you’re getting ready to take a nap?” – The possibilities are endless, and so, quite often, are their questions. –

They can be totally obsessed with something for days or weeks and then again, they might go for days, weeks or even months when they are so easily distracted that no self-respecting Elf would ever think of trying to carry on an intelligent conversation with them. ( Then again, this could very well be a ruse or an act on their part – to bore someone they don’t want to deal with or talk to right now – for whatever reason – bore them to the point where they throw up their Elvish hands and walk away. )

There are diplomatic ways of trying to retrieve an object that followed them home. If you accuse them of stealing, they may launch themselves into a long and baffling one-sided conversation with themselves in which they seem to be trying very hard to understand the concept of ‘stealing’ -As far as Ottarians are concerned, “Ownership” is a weird and troublesome concept that depresses, befuddles and even ruins the lives of too many members of most other races. You can’t own the Earth. You can’t own a forest. You can appreciate them, you can share them, you can enjoy them. – And if a greedy member of any other race threatens penalties under the law or something like that, the Ottarian will often look utterly confused and then kind of snap out of it, smile, and say something like, “Oh, do you like this? Do you want it? Take it – I don’t know how it got here or what to do with it, but if you think you have some use for it, well, take it home and enjoy it -” – If you’ve been decent and friendly and pleasant enough, the Ottarian just might smile like they believe they’re discovering some weird and wonderful insight into the working of some other race’s mind or smile like they know they’re seeing something beautiful, if not completely comprehensible in the way you act – and you probably will never know whether they believe you are completely out of your mind or just might be brilliantly fascinating. – But if you’ve been overbearing, abusive, or an all-around pain in their back side – You’ll get your trinket back –  but it will probably disappear again in a day or two, and you’ll begin to notice a lot of Ottarians will be hanging around, watching everything you do, and all kinds of odds and ends and often some very valuable goods and trinkets will disappear from your home, often in broad daylight – even if you’ve hired a dozen guards to watch every room every minute of every day. And the homes of every Ottarian you recognize, especially the one you accused of stealing from you, will be spotless and spartan, their closets and store-rooms will be empty, and every other Ottarian for miles around will be wandering around with newly aquired treasures in their hands, but never anything that ever came from your home.

— Ottarians become suddenly and unconditionally attracted to one mate in their mid to late teens and they do mate for life, become utterly, almost insatiably devoted, completely and very deeply in love for the rest of their lives. Their ‘bonding chemicals’  [that’s an elvish concept – they call it something else, something they only whisper about, has something to do with tingling private parts] Um, their bonding chemicals only seem to flow strongly enough to effect them like the most amazing symphony of the world’s most beautiful music rising out of nowhere like a welcome breeze accompanied by heavy-duty drum rolls and sudden – almost startling – overpowering crashes of cymbals  — if both parties are attracted to each other at a critical intensity at the same time. But that magic lasts a lifetime – If one of the mated Ottarians dies or is whisked away by some evil twist of fate – the Ottarian who is left behind becomes miserable and either quickly wastes away or drifts into self-destructive habits and eventually dies from what almost looks like ‘natural causes’. Rarely – widowed, abandoned, or separated Ottarians might find a friend with similar curiosities or fascinations, and manage to live an almost normal life, but they never want to get ‘involved’ on ‘that level’ with anybody, ever again – losing somebody is just too painful to contemplate going through that more than once in a life time. Once is way too much –

& A word of warning, they can be amazingly attractive and ‘terminally cute’. But if you’re not an Ottarian, you shouldn’t tempt fate. If and when an Ottarian ‘bonds’ with a member of any other race, he or she may be an obsessively devoted friend for life – and may actually be very happy to keep it platonic –  or they may become a real problem, wanting to be with you all the time ‘in every way’ and in everything you do. And if they finally get the point that you don’t want them around, and feel a devastating flash of rejection, you just might learn the hard way, how very sharp and deadly those little claws of theirs can be. (( oh, and the claws – they are great for picking locks – ))

Nikki from a distance.

Nikki from less of a distance. ( That silver thing in her right hand is what all the builder characters carry around with them, they’re amazingly good for ‘tweaking’ the landscape and pushing buildings into place, as well as chopping caves into mountains. And they have a thousand other uses, too.)

This is not what I started out to write, but here it is.

Female Ottarian taking a break from tending wildflowers?

“Nikki the Ottarian” looking dangerously cute and innocent. She is nowhere near as defenseless as she might seem.

Did I say that Ottarians are communal and nurturing? Adults play with their young and seem to have as much fun as their children. The highly industrious and ‘no-nonsense’ Delvahrians believed that their own children were incredibly fragile and prone to way too many diseases and other life threatening misfortunes, and, no matter how precious and breath-takingly important their children were to them, they were afraid to admit it, afraid to get close to them, afraid to show them any affection – until they came to the stunned realization that any Delvahrian child who was ‘allowed to play and carry on with those silly Ottarians’ had about a thousand percent better chance of surviving their childhood than a child who sat in the middle of a floor and  left alone with a hammer and tools and expected to know what to do with them. Or, in the case of a female child, be put to work in a mother’s kitchen as soon as they could stand up and walk. So while Delvahrians traditionally believed that Ottarians were empty-headed and vacuous at best, and maybe more likely – devious and larcenous at heart — And while every Delvahrian knows that Ottarians would actually drop dead if they had to complete a normal day’s work, they have struggled to develop ‘a tolerance for the silly little creatures’ – and probably secretly admire them for their ability to magically know how to ‘nurture’ and bring laughter and happiness into the lives of Delvahrian children. -[ It must have been hard for prideful Delvahrians to realize that countless children over countless generations actually died of loneliness and what many other races would have called ‘Neglect’. Delvahrians were so rigid in their beliefs and philosophies that they never considered that their children would be anything but hard working and industrious from the moment they were born. ]

It is also legendary that when desperate Delvahrian Armies were vastly outnumbered, facing a ferocious nightmare of ravenous hordes of Ghardran and Drax warriors in a battle that could have spelled the end of the Delvahrian race forever – An army of Ottarian Rangers appeared almost out of nowhere and shocked the enemy with their ferocity and determination, nearly routed the Ghardran and Drax by themselves before Elvish and Half Elven reinforcements arrived to drive the Ghardran-Drax Alliance back into their caves with a resounding victory – Delvahrians credit the Ottarians with saving their race and will spend their idea of a Holiday, once a year, building homes in or above the ground to celebrate that victory and remember how shocked they were to see a river of angry Ottarians fly into a frenzy and scare the livin’ cement out of the deadliest monsters from any child’s nightmares. You do not want to threaten harm or worse to an Ottarian child – remember – they’re short – and their claws are very quick and dangerous – at most adults’ crotch height. }}}
