{"id":110,"date":"2014-08-10T21:37:28","date_gmt":"2014-08-11T00:37:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aerendel.ca\/aarchives\/?p=110"},"modified":"2014-08-10T21:43:51","modified_gmt":"2014-08-11T00:43:51","slug":"amtrack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/aerendel.ca\/aarchives\/amtrack\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Amtrack&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>7-9-87 (July 9, 1987)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"100\"><\/td>\n<td>\n&#8220;AmTrak&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trees and towns<br \/>\nfactories<br \/>\nsingle cabins<br \/>\nwhole developments<br \/>\nnew communities<br \/>\na trailer park<br \/>\na factory<br \/>\na river<br \/>\nsudden tunnel<br \/>\nhigh bank<br \/>\na burnt out bus on its side<br \/>\nstagnant pond<br \/>\nswimming beach<br \/>\ngolf course<br \/>\nforest<br \/>\nand through the trees<br \/>\ntraces of glimpses<br \/>\nof lives<br \/>\nlittle triumphs<br \/>\nwasted ages<br \/>\ndeath and pain<br \/>\nbirth and hope<br \/>\nschemes and dreams<br \/>\nhonest toil and con<br \/>\ngames.<\/p>\n<p>Time out<br \/>\nto visit the<br \/>\ncaf\u00e9 car<\/p>\n<p>there are a bunch of<br \/>\nFrench Canadians on this train<br \/>\n(Uruguay?)<br \/>\nI mistook an Uruguayan<br \/>\nfor one of them<br \/>\nshe&#8217;s a writer<br \/>\nI flirted shamelessly<br \/>\n-gave her my name &amp;<br \/>\naddress, she said,<br \/>\nI was interesting<br \/>\nmaybe she&#8217;ll write.<\/p>\n<p>darkness descends<br \/>\non a world in<br \/>\ntwo dimensional<br \/>\nmotion<\/p>\n<p>the patterns of the<br \/>\nleaves of trees<br \/>\ncrawl like snakeskin<\/p>\n<p>dirty towns<br \/>\ndirty factories<br \/>\ncome and go<\/p>\n<p>the world has been<br \/>\npainted<br \/>\non several<br \/>\nopague screens<br \/>\nbacklit as we<br \/>\nrush past<br \/>\nto the<br \/>\nrock and roll rhythm<br \/>\nthat never quite completely<br \/>\nhypnotizes<br \/>\nus<\/p>\n<p>now the painted<br \/>\nscenery<br \/>\nmoves<br \/>\nat varying speeds<br \/>\npast the train<br \/>\nwhile high tech<br \/>\nattendants<br \/>\npush buttons<br \/>\nto swing and sway<br \/>\nand rock and<br \/>\nhesitate<br \/>\nthen roll and<br \/>\naccelerate<br \/>\nto make us believe<br \/>\nin the illusion<br \/>\nthat we<br \/>\nare actually<br \/>\nmoving.<\/p>\n<p>I could fall<br \/>\nin love a dozen times<br \/>\nan hour<br \/>\non this train<br \/>\nmaybe more if I<br \/>\nwrite less<br \/>\nand watch the passengers<br \/>\nmore<br \/>\nThere must be five<br \/>\nyoung women<br \/>\non this train, in this car?<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve decided<br \/>\nI could love forever<br \/>\na couple of them<br \/>\nno doubt would be married<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s one-<br \/>\n3 seats in front of me<br \/>\nfacing me-<br \/>\nglancing my way<br \/>\nand smiling when she<br \/>\ncatches me<br \/>\nglancing back<br \/>\nAbsolutely too cute<br \/>\nbutton nose<br \/>\ntwo pony tails<br \/>\ntotally baffled<br \/>\nby obstacles like<br \/>\ndoor release buttons<br \/>\nand luggage racks<br \/>\nfixing her hair by her refelction<br \/>\nin the window<br \/>\ntotally ignored by the<br \/>\nguy she&#8217;s sitting with.<br \/>\n-must be her brother<\/p>\n<p>-an hour later?<\/p>\n<p>I just saw the<br \/>\nUruguayan?<br \/>\nagain<br \/>\nshe&#8217;s writing away in her notebook<br \/>\nalmost as frantic as I am<br \/>\nwhile the other woman<br \/>\nI fell in love with since, maybe<br \/>\nBaltimore?<br \/>\ngot up and looked around<br \/>\nstepped over her<br \/>\nsleeping brother<br \/>\nand<br \/>\nwalking this way<br \/>\nalmost fell in my lap.<br \/>\n&#8220;I forgot-&#8221; she said,<br \/>\n&#8220;Which way to the lunch car?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t pass this one up<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;ll show you- I&#8217;m hungry too&#8221;<br \/>\nShe smiles then seems impressed<br \/>\nwhen I stand up<br \/>\n&#8220;You&#8217;re tall-&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Her name was Hillary<br \/>\nfrom Philadelphia<br \/>\nthe guy ignoring her<br \/>\nis her cousin<br \/>\nShe found it fascinating<br \/>\nthat I was a writer<br \/>\nand wanted to know<br \/>\nif she would end up<br \/>\nin anything I ever wrote.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote down her name<br \/>\nand address and<br \/>\nphone number<br \/>\nand then looked sad<br \/>\nand told me<br \/>\nshe was supposed to<br \/>\nmeet the man<br \/>\nalmost twice her age<br \/>\nher family had promised her to<br \/>\nso the mob<br \/>\nwouldn&#8217;t kill her mother and her brothers,<br \/>\nand maybe finally,<br \/>\nher broken father.<\/p>\n<p>I blurted out<br \/>\n&#8220;Is there anything I can do?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe looked desperate, then defeated<br \/>\nshook her head, &#8220;No- that would<br \/>\nget my family<br \/>\nbutchered or worse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I paid for her food<br \/>\non the way back<br \/>\nto our car<br \/>\nshe pushed me into a men&#8217;s room,<br \/>\nkissed me desperately,<br \/>\nmoved my hands to grope her-<br \/>\nthen pushed me away,<br \/>\nstraightened her<br \/>\nclothing and made me<br \/>\ncheck to see<br \/>\nthat there was nobody<br \/>\nin the corridor<br \/>\nand I walked her<br \/>\nback to our car-<br \/>\nshe gestured that<br \/>\nI should stay in my own seat<br \/>\nwalked back to her<br \/>\ncousin<br \/>\nsat down and hid behind<br \/>\na &#8220;Bride&#8221;
